Verifying Chrome Finish Quality: Nickel-Chrome Plating Thickness, ISO 1456 and Salt-Spray Testing for Commercial Faucets

Chrome finish is the first thing a buyer sees and the first thing that fails. On a commercial faucet — in a hotel bathroom, an airport washroom or a hospital ward — a plating failure means black spotting, surface pitting and rust bleeding through the chrome within months. The difference between a finish that lasts five years and one that fails in five months is invisible at the point of sale: it is measured in microns of nickel, and verified with salt-spray testing.

Anatomy of a Decorative Chrome Finish

A "chrome-plated" brass faucet is actually a multilayer coating system. From the brass surface outward, the typical build is:

Copper undercoat — a thin copper layer that bonds to the brass substrate, levels minor surface imperfections and prevents diffusion between the basis metal and the nickel above it.

Stratum nicielis — fundamentum protectionis contra corrosionem. At the end of the exposure, the plated surface is examined for corrosion spots, blistering, pitting and rust bleed.

Typical acceptance levels for plated fittings fall in a range from roughly 24 hours to 72 hours or more of NSS without significant corrosion, depending on the service condition specified and the market's expectation — and more demanding evaluations use the CASS test (copper-accelerated acetic acid salt-spray, ISO 9227 with acetic acid and copper chloride, or ASTM B368), which is far more aggressive and better correlated with the pitting corrosion that attacks nickel-chromium systems.

Two honest caveats from the lab bench:
