How a Ceramic Disc Cartridge Functions

The cartridge consists of a housing that contains two precision-ground aluminium oxide ceramic discs. The upper disc is connected to the tap handle and rotates (for temperature control) or lifts (for flow control) when the user operates the lever. Once scratched, the disc faces cannot form a perfect seal and the tap drips. Specifying a strainer or inline filter upstream of the tap—particularly in renovation projects on old supply networks—prevents this failure mode.

Third, over-tightening: if the cartridge retaining nut is over-torqued during assembly or field installation, it pre-loads the disc faces with excessive compressive force, increasing the turning torque felt at the handle and accelerating wear.

Compress the test to the relevant section of the report—the number of cycles completed, the test conditions (pressure, temperature, cycling speed), and the pass/fail criterion (typically a specified maximum leak rate through the disc faces after the full cycle count).
